First Quarter Fiscal 2020 Summary
- Consolidated net sales decreased 43% in the first quarter compared to the first quarter last year. On
March 17 , the Company temporarily closed all of its retail stores and restaurants in North America. Retail, wholesale and restaurant sales were 58%, 52%, and 50% lower, respectively. These reductions were partially offset by 12% growth in e-commerce. - Gross margin was 58.7% compared to 58.8% last year. Expanded gross margin at
Lilly Pulitzer and the benefit of LIFO accounting were offset by lower gross margin in the other businesses. - SG&A decreased
$17 million to$123 million as cost savings measures were taken, primarily related to employment costs. - A
$60 million impairment charge was recognized for Southern Tide goodwill and intangible assets. - The effective tax rate was a benefit of 23% compared to a charge of 26% in the first quarter of fiscal 2019.
